A36 carbon steel is an American standard carbon structural panel that implements the standard ASTMa36/a36M-03a and is equivalent to the Chinese brand Q235. Q235 ordinary carbon structural steel is also called A3 plate, a36 is the material of the American standard ASME standard (equivalent to the ASTM specification), SS400 is the material of the Japanese standard JISG3101 (rolled steel for general structures), Q235 is the Chinese GB/T700 standard s material.
A36 is suitable for riveting, bolting and welding structures for bridges and buildings, as well as general-purpose structural steel quality carbon steel sections, steel plates and bar steels. Q235 ordinary carbon structural steel Q represents the yield limit of this material , the following 235 refers to the yield value of this material, which is around 235MPa. And as the thickness of the material increases, its yield value decreases. Because the carbon content is moderate, the overall performance is good, the strength, plasticity and welding properties are well matched, and it is the most widely used.
ASTM A36 carbon steel Main Chemistry:
C: ≤0.25, Si: ≤0.40, Mn: ≤0.80-1.20, P: ≤0.04, S: ≤0.05, Cu: ≥0.20 (when copper-containing steel is specified).
The content of Mn element in a36 does not depend on the thickness of the plate (or diameter of the round steel). The content below 20mm does not contain Mn. Q235B has requirements for the content of C, Si, Mn, S, P and other elements, but SS400 Only S and P are required to be less than 0.050, and there are no other requirements. Q235 has a requirement for manganese content Mn=0.30-0.70%, and a36 has no requirement for manganese content.
A36 Carbon steel mechanical properties:
Yield strength: ≥250, tensile strength: 400-550, elongation: ≥20.
The tensile strength of a36 is 58~80Ksi (about 400~550MPa) and the yield strength is 36Ksi (about 250MPa); the tensile strength of Q235 is 370~500MPa and the yield strength is 235MPa; the tensile strength of SS400 is 400~510MPa. Yield strength is 245MPa.
A36 is similar to Q235B, the differences between a36 and Q235B are:
The yield points are different (a36=250MPa, Q235B=235MPa);
The tensile strength is different (a36=400-550MPa, Q235B=375-500MPa); the content requirements of elements are different (a36: C≤025%, Si≤0.4%, P≤0.04%, S≤0.05%; Q235B:C =0.12-0.2%, Si≤0.3, P≤0.045%, S≤0.045%).
